The Sperrin Mountains
The name Sperrin derives from “Na Speiríní ” meaning “Spurs of Rock” and it is the rocks of the Sperrins and the rolling geography of the area that form the foundation of this distinct landscape.
The Sperrin Mountain range, stretching 40 miles along the border of counties Tyrone and Derry is the largest in Ireland. There are 10 summits above 500 metres with the highest of the range, Sawel Mountain, peaking at 678m (2,224ft).
The area is rich in history and ancient archaeological sites can be found throughout the region. The Sperrins were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1968, covering an area of 101006 hectares. In 2010 the area surrounding our dairy was designated as a Special Area of Conservation for otters and as spawning beds for Atlantic Salmon. This created even more of an impetus to both celebrate this special area as well as seeking to minimize our impact on it.
We feel privileged to live in this beautiful region and will continue to draw inspiration from it.
